Crimson Legend is a joint project by several Fushigi Yuugi fanfiction writers who wished to create a place for all fans of the series to find quality stories by talented and contemporary writers in the field. The site was started in June 2000 due to the demise of the old Fushigi Yuugi fanfiction archive, too much caffeine, and a long night in a chatroom.

The site's title is derived from Chiriko's Image Song, Akai Iitsutae.
